Transmedia vs. Lean

I’ve noticed that there are two parallel tendencies (or mind sets) going on right now in the transmedia world. Interestingly enough they seem to be somewhat in conflict with each other.
What I’m referring to is this:

Lean – keep it simple and test, test, test
The concept of “Lean” is all about handling resources. The idea originally comes from Toyota, who during strong economical pressure in the 80’s managed to find a way of producing cars that minimized the use of resources simply by keeping a strong focus on what customers wanted. During the 90’s the principles and methods of Lean spread over the world reaching diverse industries.

Focus testing with users - an energy boost for the design process

In February we held a focus group at Ozma about the game we're currently developing - Below, a magical realism adventure game, connected to the transmedia universe Granny's Dancing on the Table.

Expanding your team

Making Agent cards..

The last year we have attended quite a few trans-media workshops. Something we hear over and over again is "expand your team!". But as a documentary filmmaker we don’t often work with big budgets and hence often work in small teams. So thinking about expanding the team this early in the documentary process felt very new to me. To change this lack of team experience I sent an ad to Malmö University looking for interns. My plan was to attract work colleagues by promising experience in a field that no one really knows anything about, but wish they did, the transmedia industry. The result was actually better than expected. After working in a duo with my co-director for many years, our ground team is now temporarily strengthened with 150% as we are accompanied by two interns and one girl writing her final theses at the university.

No bananas for Dirty Snow.

…not knowing if you have fuel to go all the way.
Last week I was in Stockholm to meet Hanna Holm, friend and makeup artist. It was time to give Dirty Snow, the main character in my project a face and to define a style. Me and Hanna had met twice before, and sent different picture references to each other. I've been shopping some clothes and props during the two years as Dirty Snow has been under development but she has not yet become a person. It was about time to take action.

What is participation?

When working with transmedia the question of participation is constantly present. What is participation? What kind of activity can we expect our viewers to engage in? And what do we, as creators, actually want from our audience?
